Our Story

The word MAPA comes from Mallacoota Abalone Pearls Australia (MAPA).

Throughout our journey we have endured many ups and downs.

Through tragedy, we have persevered and continue to produce stunning Abalone Pearls in the memory of the late Mary and Gerry Menke.

We have faced numerous challenges including governmental restrictions, court cases challenging our sustainable aquaculture lease areas, and family loss. All of these have lead to a stronger and united MAPA Pearls family.

MAPA maintain a harmonious relationship with its surroundings, ensuring that its exclusive Aquaculture lease remains sustainable and maintains a balanced ecosystem.

MAPA have featured on world renowned media programs such as BBC Coast Australia, and 2 episodes of ABC Backroads with Heather Ewert.

MAPA Pearls have also featured in multiple written media texts.

From installing infrastructure with impact hydraulic hammer drills using qualified divers, to seeding animals and regular feeding, MAPA Pearls employees are always busy. Our infrastructure must constantly be maintained due to the wild and unpredictable weather that can hit Gabo Island. Some swell has been reported well over 10-15m.

Then comes the time for harvesting our animals and the crucial part of cutting out and Grading Abalone Pearls.
